Welcome to The By Land Podcast!

Thank you SO much for joining me on the podcast as a guest!  Before we get into the administrative side of things, I want to briefly explain what it is I'm trying to accomplish here at By Land so you know what it's all about.

By Land

Help and education

I built By Land to help people get the most enjoyment they can out of backpacking.  To me, backpacking is an incredibly special gift and something that doesn't have to be painful, hard, or confusing.  Whether someone hiking thousands of miles on a long trail, out for a weekend overnighter, or hunting miles and miles into a wilderness area, I care first and foremost about that persons experience.  I believe the more we spend in nature, the more connected we become with the world around us.  The benefits of being out there in nature are numerous and my one and only aim here with this website and podcast is to help people seek and find those adventures they crave and do so in a way that keeps them going back for more each time.  If as a collective group we can help just one single person, then we've done our jobs for the episode because we'll have set that person on a positive trajectory from which they can build upon and share with others they interact with.

By Land

I want By Land to be a place where people of all walks of life can come to share ideas, concepts, and experiences so that others might learn from them.  There's no absolute right way to backpack because everyone has their own styles and reasons for being out there in the first place.  I firmly believe in building bridges between communities that otherwise might not have much in common which is why I cover topics of both hunting, Thru Hiking, and general backpacking.  Regardless of what we head to the wilderness for, we all have one thing in common; a love for those wild places and a desire to keep them safe and accessible for generations to come.

How it Works

Here's how it all works, from start to finish.  At the bottom on this page, you'll see a form for you to fill out.  When you're done here with the admin stuff, check it out, fill out the fields and click submit!

    • By the time you're reading this, we'll have already likely locked in at date and time for the recording to take place.  Because life is ever changing, it's understandable if we need to adjust.  Just let me know as soon as possible and we'll figure something out.
    • This is not a crazy formal interview, but rather a conversation between the two of us.  I'll come up with a general outline of the things I'm interested in learning from you, but it's not set in stone.  If we get off onto a rabbit trail, so be it.  I'll be responsible for asking the questions and guiding the conversation, but it's an open ended interview so don't worry if we don't get to all the topics in the outline I'll send you.
    • I record via Skype Call Recorder, but I can call both a Skype account or a regular phone number.  Whichever audio quality and connection is best on your end is the preferred method.  For quality of audio, if you can reduce background noise as much as possible, the final episode will sound much better for listeners.
      • FOR SKYPE
        • I’ll need your Skype handle prior to recording so I can find your account.  Skype can be a little weird at times when it comes to ensuring I'm calling the correct account.
          • My Skype handle is emoryrw (I'll likely show up as Emory Wanger).
          • If you don't have a Skype account, don't worry.  We can record via phone.
      • FOR PHONE
        • I'll need a good phone number to reach you at on the day of the recording.  If it's a cell phone, just make sure you're in good coverage.
    • The better the connection you have on your end, the better chances we have of not dropping out any audio of the interview.  We want you to sound as good as you can so listeners can hear everything you're saying without being distracted.
    • Expect about an hour in duration.  I’ve found this provides enough time to cover the topics without rambling on.
    • Since this isn’t a live call, I have the ability to edit as necessary.  If you want to rephrase or if one of us starts hacking up a lung, I can take care of that in post to make it sound seamless, however I don't make it a habit to over edit if I don't need to.
    • I’m not here to catch anyone off guard so if there are any topics you prefer not to cover, let me know and I’ll do my best to avoid those.
    • On the flip side, if you would like to ensure we cover certain topics you're passionate about, please let me know so I can add them to my outline for the interview.
